with mathematics

I specialize in working with students who are finding math too easy, students who are finding math too hard, and students who are finding math too boring.

Philosophy

Enrichment

If a fifth grader is finding math in school too easy because they already have a strong understanding of the material, it makes no sense to just start teaching them sixth grade material. This is just setting the student up for even more boredom in the future. Fortunately, math is incredibly deep and there are ways to extend the curriculum at every grade level without just accelerating learning to next year's standards. Reach out if this sounds intriguing and you'd like some examples.

Support

When a student is struggling, it sometimes feels like the best way to help is to do the thinking for them or to try and simplify the thinking with tricks. Unfortunately, this is just setting the student up for even more confusion in the future. Individualized support with an experienced teacher allows for the space and time for sense-making, and sense-making leads to long-term understanding which leads to enjoyment and success.

Exploration

There's just so much cool math out there, and even a great K-12 curriculum can't explore it all. Whether a student is coming with specific mathematical interests, interests they don't see as mathematical, or just a general curiosity about the world, individualized exploration is an opportunity to engage in the culture of mathematics while engaging in mathematical play and sense-making.

About Me

A professional headshot of Avery Pickford

Hi, I'm Avery Pickford.

I've worked with more than a thousand students, including ones that initially came into my classroom deeply afraid of mathematics and ones that have gone on to be professional mathematicians (and at least one student who did both). I became a teacher because so many people (including myself) have less than great experiences with math in school and, regardless of whether you find school math easy and want to go deeper or find school math impossible and want to quit, I am committed to helping you become more connected to math.
